ViewPoint Gallery is an artist-run co-operative, whose members are photographers working together to nurture and promote their artistic passion and the practice of their craft, to exhibit and market their work, and to actively engage in the cultural life of the broader photographic community. Owned and operated by the artists who show on its walls, ViewPoint Gallery represents a wide range of photographers in a unique and vibrant setting in downtown Halifax.
Unlike traditional spaces, ViewPoint presents a dynamic approach to the display of fine art photography, exhibiting a mix of solo and group shows. The gallery displays work by its members every month, but also showcases individual photographers through month-long solo shows. In addition, there are several group shows each year, each focusing on a specific topic, and on special occasions, exhibitions by non-member photographers or groups.
Founded in July, 2000, ViewPoint Gallery has for fourteen years been the only gallery in Halifax dedicated to exhibiting fine art photography. Created as a co-operative venture between Nova Scotia photographers and printmakers, the gallery formally shifted to focusing on fine art photography exclusively in 2006.
Since its founding, ViewPoint Gallery has hosted over 165 different exhibitions, bringing a wide range of photographic subject and technique to tens of thousands of visitors.
In 2008 ViewPoint moved to its current location at 1272 Barrington St. in downtown Halifax. With the new location comes opportunity for the Gallery to expand its exhibit facilities and operations, including an Open Print Review and Guest Speaker series, and a partnership with PhotoWorkshops.ca to provide educational classes within the gallery’s new space.
