Mitre 10 Kids Big Pumpkin Competition 2014

For the second year in a row Mitre 10 has launched it’s annual hunt for New Zealand’s biggest pumpkin grown by a kid.

The competition opened on the 1st of October with the weigh in occurring around the country on Saturday April 5, 2014.

To get involved pick up a pack of our special BIG pumpkin seeds at your local Mitre 10 MEGA and then register as a pumpkin grower here.Get growing and once your pumpkin is BIG bring it along to your local Mitre 10 MEGA for the BIG pumpkin weigh-in on Saturday April 5, 2014 for judging at 1pm.There will be prizes for biggest, ugliest and best-dressed pumpkins on the day with the heaviest pumpkin from each store in the battle to win an iPad mini and a garden goodie pack plus the title of Grand National winner.

How to grow big Pumpkins

  • Plant early spring: Under glass so they don’t get too cold and space 2 to 4 metres apart so they have plenty of room to grow.
  • Give them plenty to drink: Especially during germination. Keep seedbed evenly moist, but don’t drown them.
  • Keep them warm: Pumpkins need plenty of sun and protection from the wind.
  • Pick one: Pick the biggest pumpkin on each vine and get rid of the others so the one that’s left grows like mad.
  • Make up your mind, pumpkin! Pumpkins love sun but not too much sun. In mid-summer heat they like a little light shade.
  • Chop! In Autumn, cut the pumpkin off. Leave 10 or 20cm of vine attached and lift pumpkin into a sunny, sheltered spot to ripen.
  • Don’t Eat It: These big pumpkins are NOT for eating – unless you’re a pig

The seeds are available now at 50cents per packet and all the proceeds are going toward the Mitre 10 Takahē rescue programme.

There will be a grand national winner as well as regional winners.  There will be fun activities for family’s on the day and prizes also for the best dressed and ugliest pumpkins.

The heaviest from each store are in the battle for an iPad mini and a garden goodie pack plus getting the title of Grand National winner.

Last years winner was from Ashburton with a 124kg pumpkin grown by 12 year old Taylor Mackenzie.
