The Shortest Short Story Competition This Side of Australia

The Shortest Short Story Competition

Welcome to The Shortest Short Story Competition This Side of Australia. This unique competition opens on 1 July 2013 and we’re calling for short stories comprising 49 words or fewer. (That’s not a typo.)

Win $1200 in prizes

It’s easy to enter. Just write your short story in the form below!

We’ve decided to celebrate stories that are short and sweet. It takes a lot of skill to write a compelling story in 49 words. It has been said Ernest Hemingway was once challenged to write a story in six words. He did:

Whether or not this literary legend is true, if it can be done in six words, we think 49 is generous!

There will be three rounds over three weeks in the competition, with one winner announced each week. All short stories entered in the competition must contain the designated signature word for that week.

Round 1:

Entries from 9am Monday 1 July 2013 to 11.49pm Sunday 7 July 2013

Signature word:
“FOOTBALL”

Round 2:

to
11.49pm Sunday 14 July 2013

“WINE”

Round 3:

to

Entry to The Shortest Short Story Competition is open to residents of Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia. To recognise our community in the southern part of Australia, the three signature words reflect something from each state. (If you’re from another state, don’t worry. We have more competitions coming up for you!)

Judges will assess stories based on whether they are well-crafted, creative and compelling. Competition judges include acclaimed authors Pamela Freeman (author of Victor’s Quest and the Castings Trilogy), Kylie Ladd (author of Into My Arms and Last Summer) and James Roy (author of Full Moon Racing and Anonymity Jones).

Please note: Finalists’ entries are submitted to judges without any names attached.

Each winner will win $400 worth of writing courses at the Australian Writers’ Centre, which can be redeemed for any “classroom” or “online” courses.
