Worm Charming

Written by: Kompster

The sport of worm charming (also known as worm grunting and worm fiddling) is very simple. Each competitor gets a patch of ground and a certain amount of time to bring as many worms to the surface as they can. Competitors can use just about any method they wish, though be warned – the use of dishwashing detergent has been banned.

Events

  • The annual World Worm Charming Championships are held in the village of Willaston, near Nantwich, Cheshire. In this competition, each team gets a 3x3m plot and has 30 minutes to charm as many worms as they can.
  • Apart from the World Worm Charming Championships there is also the International Festival of Worm Charming that takes place in South Devon on early May Bank Holiday weekend (Sunday). They’ve been doing it for 30 years and have a much more relaxed approach to the art of worm charming.  http://www.wormcharming.co.uk
